Moesgaard Museum

At COMMUNITAS is a very special community, which is centred around Moesgaard Campus and the department of anthropology. But this department would not exist without the ethnographic museum. Moesgaard Museum is home to numerous objects with their own biography and the employees at the ethnographic department both preserve, exhibit, communicate and research the material culture of the world.

At this page you will find information about the activities of the museum and the results of the collaborations between the museum and the department of anthropology at AU.

THE THAI FESTIVAL 2022

The summer of 2022, the third Thai Festival was held at Moesgaard Museum around the beautiful Thai House, which is part of the permanent collection at the Museum located behind the old mansion. The event was held in collaboration with the Royal Thai Embassy in Denmark and Sawasdee Thai Danish collective.

Below is a vingette from the Thai Festival and an interview with museum inspector Ulrik Høj Johnsen. Filmed and edited by Katrine Pahuus.

2021: "Drømme/dreams"
En udstilling I udvikling/An exhibition in progress

We dream at night, we day dream of warmer skies, we dream of fundamental societal changes and personal ambition. But what happens when a group of anthropology students ask, what is it really to dream?

This years anthropology cohort is currently in the process of creating a new exhibition at Moesgaard Museum. At COMMUNITAS we want to invite you behind the scenes and facilitate dialogue. Here, you get the chance to follow their process through images and commentary on both fieldwork and curating a long the way.

2020: "Reparationer/Repair"
En virtuel antropologisk studenterudstilling/A ritual anthropological student exhibition

When is something broken? When should it be repaired?

We atribute reparations different meanings and repair in different ways. Repertions can be large and small, concrete and abstract. We repair everywhere; in our selves, in the home, in society, in nature. When we repair, not only do we decide what is worth repairing we also decide what is not. In this digital space we invite all on a journey through seven different perspectives on the numerous nuances of reparations.

2019: "Vi, Dyrene/We the Animals"
Mennesker-dyr relationer/Human-animal relations

As long as humans have existed, animals have been part og everyday life. They are the teddy bears in the children's room. They are meat in sandwiches. They buzz at night and make it difficult to sleep. They guard the front door. They create the milk for the coffee and knit wool into socks. They are reading this very text.

We, humans and animals, have always lived with one another. The world is constantly changing and so are our relationships.

On the six islands of this exhibition you can experience six different perspectives on human-animal relationships. Follow the street boy around the hectic city life and take a break with the dogs in the staff room. Go beneath the sea surface where mystical creatures live, and meet the mermaid only ever seen by a few. On the coastline you will find traces of feral species whose journey is as puzzling as the animal itself. When animals describe our feelings we might feel butterflies flutter in our stomachs.

Human and animal life are irrefutably tied together. But where to draw the line? When are humans animals and when are animals human?

2018: "I Bevægelse/In Motion"
Et anderledes bud på nomader/A different take on nomads

You are now standing on the threshold of an exhibition on nomads. Maybe you perceive nomads as wandering from place to place. Rootless, without a fixed destination. They stir our imagination. They question the steady and secure. They challenge familiar ways of living. But how far from your everyday life are they?

IN MOTION is created by 72 anthropology students, and presents a wide range of both familiar and unknown nomads. Join us on a journey through the exhibition. Allow yourself to be puzzled and challenged. You might meet other sides of yourself.

Welcome to IN MOTION - a different take on nomads.
